The National Honor Society came in first place at the Mayflower Marathon food drive, raising $6,913.48.

The Mayflower Marathon is a food drive hosted by Rock 102 whose goal is to fill three 48-foot trailers with non-perishable food items for the Open Pantry. The Open Pantry in Springfield, Mass., assists the hungry or homeless.

“It’s basically a can and money drive.” says Elizabeth Skaza, the president of NHS. “It’s a competition of their own and for school districts.”

Skaza explained that it was an incredible and really cool experience and that Rock 102 met their goal of filling 3 trailers full.

“This year we had many teachers offer bonus points if a student brought in cans. Chapin Street also helped out. They filled two car themselves. ”

NHS beat their total from last year which was $4,191.98. “We won $1,000 for the club and a Big Y gift card. It’s like a tradition for LHS to win.”

“NHS is truly grateful for the help and support of the school.” said Shannon Ramah in an email. “We contributed to a great cause and the NHS had fun participating!”
