The 69th annual Grammy nominations window started August 31, 2025. Since then, seemingly every single musical artist has dropped some sort of album or single. With the eligibility period halfway done, fans are wondering who could take home the gold at this year’s Grammys.
So what exactly makes an album Grammy-worthy? Although there are hundreds of factors that play a role in an album’s success, the main contributions have to be the artist and their popularity, the album’s success, and the lyricism and production of the album.
Possible Nominations
The first notable artist to drop music for the 2027 Grammys was Taylor Swift.
Her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, was released on October 3, 2026, and was quickly criticized by the media.
Liberty Carlson comments on her latest album, saying,
“I think her new album was good until it wasn’t. I haven’t listened to that album since it dropped. The songs were catchy, but then they all got overplayed and I started to hate them.”
Even though there are some harsh thoughts around her new music, she will still win many awards. Her singles Fate of Ophelia, and Opalite were charting months after the album’s release, making them real contenders for Record of the Year.
Although many people think this was her worst album to date, it is still likely to be nominated for Album of the Year. You could attribute this to Taylor’s massive popularity, but it could also be because of the success of her singles. Fate of Ophelia was #1 on Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks, making it her longest-running single at #1. Opalite also spent a week at #1, and then fell to #6 its second week on the charts.
Taylor Swift isn’t the only one dominating the charts lately. Making his big comeback after a 4-year break was Harry Styles. His album, Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally, was the perfect album to come back to. Styles describes his own album in an interview with Zane Lowe as “a deeply personal project focused on honesty”.
To Harry Styles, his album is not about winning awards, but his own expression of his life currently. Does his vulnerability in this album push it to win Album of the Year? Maybe? It’s not that he is honest and open in this album that could make it successful, but how each song takes you through the ups and downs of his life.
For example, Coming Up Roses is a more acoustic, slow song about a relationship that seems perfect in the beginning, but slowly, as people get to know each other, they realize how different they are. When you compare this to a song like “Dance No More,” you can see the versatility of this album. “Dance No More” is an upbeat song about the need for community, according to Genius.
Swift and Styles have already proven themselves in the music industry, but someone like Olivia Rodrigo, a young artist, still has to prove herself to the academy. The Grammys describe her as a “defining voice of her generation”, giving her 13 total nominations and 3 awards for her past two albums.
Rodrigo’s third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl so in Love, releasing June 12, 2026, has been gaining a lot of attention recently. Her singles “Drop Dead” and “The Cure” have given her listeners a glimpse of her new album. Drop Dead already debuting at #1 on Billboard Hot 100, definitely shows her upcoming album will be successful. Even though she is much younger than most of her competitors, she still stands a real chance at the Grammys.
Is it “Grammy Worthy”?
Does popularity really affect their chances of winning Grammys? Artists with the largest fanbases usually dominate the charts, social media, and trends throughout the yea
r. It’s easy to believe that the most popular artists automatically have the best chances at winning. But if you look at past winners of Album of the Year, you can tell it’s much more complicated.
Lily Moore, a high school student at LHS, shares her opinion on what makes an album “Grammy worthy”.
“I think it has to affect people, like the media. You can really tell when an album really impacts something.”
Ava Peczka shares her opinion on the Recording Academy’s picks,
“I think they choose someone who has catchy lyrics, but they play it safe most of the time. It’s like they don’t want someone who overpowers in one category, but who balances it all the best.”
This is a trend the Recording Academy seems to follow.
Recently, the Recording Academy has given awards to a variety of artists and genres. Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter finally earned her first Album of the Year in 2025, after years of commercial success. Even last year, Bad Bunny’s album DtMF showed that the Grammys are willing to recognize global music.
Something all of these Albums have in common is popularity, but they also affected public culture heavily. Beyonce’s song “THIS AIN’T TEXAS” was trending throughout most of 2024 and was a huge shift for Beyonce from pop to country. This was not only a catchy song but also something that influenced the media at the time.
The Grammys balance commercial success, artistic achievement, and influence in the media, so it is unpredictable what the voters value most each year based on the winners.
So what about their competition? The 67th Grammy’s Album of the Year nominees were pretty diverse. Sabrina Carpenter’s album Short and Sweet had the song of the summer, “Espresso,” which ran the charts for most of the year.
Charlie XCX Brat was a major cultural movement online, and used Kamala Harris to promote her presidential campaign, so it definitely had the most cultural influence in the 2024 Grammys.
Young artists like Billie Eilish and Chappell Roan were nominated, but older artists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were also nominated. So the amount of time in the industry does not necessarily prevent someone from winning.
Proven by the diversity of the nominees, the chance to win Album of the Year is not just exclusive to industry veterans but to new faces as well.
Predictions for 2027
This upcoming Grammys will most likely have similar results to 2025. Many top artists are nominated, old and new. The artist who will come out on top will most likely be someone who’s been marinating in the industry. This year’s winner might not have the deepest lyricism of all the singers, be the most popular person, or have an overall chart dominating album, but be something that has a baseline level of all these qualities.
