With the holidays around the corner and a new Star Wars movie coming out on Dec. 16, toys based on the franchise will be a big hit. As a fan of Star Wars, I have purchased many of their toys. However, some of them do not live up to my expectations. A few of the toys shine out of the garbage, those being the Black Series Action Figures. Articulation in the toys is prominent and they can be posed in a lot more ways than the standard three inch action figures, but they don’t come without faults.

I will be looking at three toys from the Black Series, Kylo Ren, Rey and BB-8, and Jyn Erso (Jedha). Yes, I probably confused you with fancy nerd terms, but I will be using a lot more of them so hang in there. Before I begin, here’s a disclaimer: this review contains spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen the Star Wars: Force Awakens.

Kylo Ren fills the role as my favorite character in the Force Awakens and I love his toys. I find myself buying Kylo Ren over everything else. When I saw him in the six inch Black Series, I had to have it. You can pose him to match almost every scene he’s in, but his lightsaber didn’t live up to my expectations. After a while the plastic of the lightsaber deformed and began to curve in and that’s no fun. Though he did kill Han Solo, so I’ll give the toy a rating of eight out of ten, only because the lightsaber is a disappointment.

Another moderate toy is Rey and BB-8, which is not nearly as popular. BB-8 who’s an added bonus, everyone loves him, but getting it to stand up straight is near impossible. Rey is equally as articulate as the others, but she lacks quality in her paint job. Her face does not look like Daisy Ridley’s, but the figure has the correct outfit and the signature Rey buns. I’ll give it a seven out of ten.

When I first bought the Jyn Erso (Jedha), I was not satisfied with it, but I was planning on displaying it either way. Since I’ve had it for a couple months now, I’ve realized it’s a much better quality toy for the same price. With an accurate paint job, the face actually looks like Jyn’s. Posing the toys can be difficult and none of the poses look natural to me. The box it came in looks cool and with that in mind I give the toy an eight out of ten and the box itself, a ten out of ten.

You can find these toys anywhere that sells toys and the prices vary from place to place. They cost around $15 at Target and on Amazon and at Toys R’ Us they cost $20. I would recommend Target, they always seem to have stocked shelves.

The Black Series Action Figures is the perfect gift for the Star Wars fan in your life this holiday season.
