Every year during October, major breast cancer charities hold an international health campaign bringing awareness for the 32% of women diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Within the 32%, at least 3% of those women are tragically lost to the disease each year.
To celebrate this campaign, the girls’ varsity volleyball team had commemorated the month during their Friday night home game at 6:30 PM. With the help of Junior, Hayden Morin, and Senior, Sophia Alvaro, each varsity player had both a pink ribbon and hand print on the lower half of their body when walking onto the court.
The plan came into motion when one of the players, Sophomore Madelyn Goncalces-Korny, had mentioned it within their group chat. Sophomore Ella Lariviere then offered paint she already had from the previous year they had done a similar effort.
When asked if this would continue throughout October—a handful of players weren’t actually sure since painting themselves in the memorable pink color, a color associated with breast cancer, was a last minute decision between them to make. Whether or not this continues into the rest of the month—the effort to make this happen reflects the positive and supportive nature of the team.
Despite the loss from the night, the sentiment made by the choice to go through with bringing awareness into the LHS gymnasium stands out far more than any set match.
