This past Wednesday, LHS’ annual “Club Fair” occurred within the auditorium presenting the usual clubs besides two new extracurriculars that appeared beside the rest of the every-year tables : Astronomy Club and Model Congress.
Model Congress, besides the fact that this has been a thing already. A thing that should ring a bell for each year’s student council as it has been a running group meant solely for student council members until now. The advisor for this club has been Mrs. Anderson.
The student representative holding down the club’s fort at the Club Fair, Junior Natalina Castro, entails the main gist of the club.
It is meant to be a “model” or student-ized version of Congress for students to adapt to skills required in legislature scenarios. The skills that would be developed from this club would include but certainly not limited to:
- Critical thinking
- Debate
- Leadership
- Public speaking
- Research
- Writing
Castro briefly mentioned that a Boston trip was in mind for the club, for any Boston-crazed students interested in debate and legislature-focused roleplay. Though, don’t let the “roleplay” aspect scare you off. How else are you supposed to gain legitimately needed skills for the political world?
Astronomy Club, exactly what the average person can assume it is, is currently being advised by Mr. Gavrilov.
The group entails multiple astronomy-themed activities on their social media. Activities that they deem planned but not limited to:
- Space-themed crafts
- Stargazing
- Movies
- Trips
They mention snacks in the list, though most clubs tend to offer food during meetings already.
As for their Club Fair poster, it entertains more scientific plans for interested LHS students:
- Guest speakers
- Engineering models
- “Space talk”
It also referred to similar activities the social media page used, not solely the list given here.
The first meeting for this club is this Thursday to discuss future meeting dates.
