October is here, and that means it’s time to participate in the numerous fall activities that are annually enjoyed throughout the season. We wait year-long for these events to roll around with Halloween and pumpkin spice in mind. Even if fall isn’t your favorite time of year, you can’t deny the way the leaves changing color makes you feel.
Fruits and Veggies?
While eating healthy may not be your thing, picking produce is definitely a fall activity. Apple picking is a big craze this time of year. The weather is just right to put on your favorite sweater and jeans combo and make your way to the apple trees. Not to mention that the juicy reds are at their ripest this season.
Apple picking may be big in the fall, but it’s definitely not as big as pumpkin picking. This is by far the most popular fall activity, and, in my opinion, the best. Be prepared to get a little dirty as you harvest huge pumpkins from the ground. A popular spot for Ludlowians is McRays Farm, where you can have a hay ride, a pumpkin patch, and a zoo visit all in one trip.
Just make sure not to choose one too big, or you’ll have lots of trouble carrying it back…
Decorating
Like all other seasons, fall has its signature decor. Take the pumpkins you just picked and carve up a spooky jack-o-lantern! If you’re not into gutting vegetables, though, an easy way out is to just paint a design on the pumpkin. I’m not an artistic person myself, but decorating pumpkins is an activity that I really enjoy.
Besides pumpkins, there are many other things to decorate this fall. Put up scary Halloween props and frighten your neighbors. Hang leaf garlands around your house and light apple-scented candles to get into the spirit. Or, build a scarecrow! All you need are leaves, old clothes, and creativity.
You can also decorate yourself this fall. By decorating yourself, I mean choosing a Halloween costume. Many of the same costumes show up every year, but be creative and make your outfit a memorable one. Dress up on your own or have a group trick-or-treating session with matching costumes. Superheroes are always popular.
Destroying the Kitchen!
I think baking is at its peak during the fall. The coziest and most heart-warming foods are made this time of year.
Your previously picked apples can turn into a delicious cinnamon apple pie. Throw out the McDonald’s and make it yourself. The same goes for pumpkins. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies, and pumpkin rolls are the embodiment of fall in a pastry.
Don’t like pumpkin? Just make regular baked goods. Light a candle and play some spooky Halloween tunes. They taste just as yummy and will fill your belly and keep you happy for the next activity.
Watching Movies
Bundle up with a warm blanket, get cozy, and put on your favorite fall movie. With crisp air blowing outside and leaves rustling on the ground, a movie is a great way to get lost in the fall spirit. Popcorn is a classic, but festive cookies and pie will do the trick.
Some of my favorite Halloween classics are Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Goosebumps. Fall movies don’t always have to be scary. Get together with your friends and binge your favorite rom-coms or action movies.
If you are watching horror, make sure you can still sleep at night.
