Seniors lead young wrestling team

With low numbers, but high aspirations, the LHS wrestling team looks to take down their doubters this year.
“Our team’s pretty young this year, having only two seniors,” said senior captain Chris Scagliarini, adding that, “our numbers are low, so there is a lot of room for improvement.”
With the team having such low numbers, it’s mathematically impossible for them to win many matches. They lack athletes in several weight classes, which will result in forfeits.
“Having such low numbers makes it hard for the team to win,” Scagliarini said, “but everyone will do good individually.”
Both Scagliarini and senior co-captain Jared Dias look to dominate the mats once again this year. Both wrestlers made it to the Western Mass. tournament last year, with Dias advancing to States.
The team attended the Red Raider Invitational on Dec. 10 at Athol High School.
Scagliarini won all four of his matches in the 126 weight class. He came in first in the whole tournament and received the gold medal, beating Belchertown, top-seeded Minnechaug, Granby, and Westfield.
Despite a torn left shoulder, Dias insisted on competing in the tournament and made it to the finals for the 145 weight class, but ultimately came up short.
The team opens at home on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. as they host Longmeadow.
